When people are swiping on dating apps, decisions are made fast. Your profile needs to grab their attention within seconds, or it risks blending into the hundreds of other profiles they’ve come across that day.
As a sex and love coach, I’ve helped many people refine their profiles to stand out. Here are a few easy ways to improve your dating profile that, in my experience, increase the number of matches.
Include Photos of Yourself Being Active
Selfies work well for showing what you look like, as long as they aren’t overly edited or posed. But you don’t need to have more than two or three photos just showing your face. There are plenty of attractive faces on dating apps; what will truly make you stand out is your personality. Add pictures that showcase your hobbies, interests, and career. These types of images act as conversation starters and show you’re a person of depth.
Write What You’re Looking For
A major benefit of dating apps is that they help you avoid situations where your desires don’t align with someone else’s. If you’re looking for a long-term partner, state that clearly. If you want children, be upfront. If you’re interested in something casual, be honest about that too. It’s far better to find this out early than to get emotionally invested only to realize you have incompatible goals.
Stay Positive
It’s important to state what you want, but avoid focusing on what you don’t want. Phrases like “no fuckboys,” “please be on time,” or “I don’t need friends; I have enough” can come across as negative or bitter. Keep the tone positive and welcoming to attract like-minded people.
Describe Your Life with Specificity
When writing about your interests, focus on the things that make you unique. Instead of saying you enjoy hanging out with friends, relaxing, traveling, or listening to music (since these are things almost everyone enjoys), describe your favorite dish to cook, your dream vacation destination, or the indie band you’re currently obsessed with. This gives people a chance to see if they share similar interests with you.
Include an Invitation
Make it easy for someone to ask you out by adding something like “let’s go for a walk” or “looking for someone to take me out for ice cream” to your profile. This lets anyone who’s interested know that you’re open to meeting in person and gives them an easy suggestion for a first date.
Get Your Friends’ and Families’ Opinions
Here’s a simple test: show your profile to your friends and family and ask them if they’d know it was yours without being told. Your profile should be distinctive enough that it’s unmistakably you. If your loved ones aren’t sure, it might be time to make it less generic. Remember, anyone interested in dating you wants to get to know the real you—not a version of yourself that resembles everyone else.

Online dating apps are all about quick impressions. With just a few seconds to catch someone’s attention, your profile must stand out to avoid getting lost among the many others they see daily.
As a sex and love coach, I’ve worked with many individuals to help them create profiles that truly reflect who they are. Here are a few simple strategies to improve your dating profile, based on my experience, that can increase your chances of getting more matches.
Include Photos of Yourself Being Active
While selfies can give a glimpse of your face, they’re not enough to show your personality. Don’t overdo it with pictures of just your face—two or three simple shots are usually enough. Instead, include photos that showcase your interests, hobbies, and activities. Whether you’re hiking, cooking, or engaging in a favorite hobby, these images make it easier for people to see who you are beyond your looks. They’re great conversation starters, too!
Write What You’re Looking For
Dating apps are a convenient way to meet people, but they also offer the advantage of quickly determining if your goals align with someone else’s. If you’re seeking a serious relationship, be clear about it. If you want children or you’re only interested in casual dating, mention that upfront. Honesty about what you’re looking for helps you avoid wasting time on dates where your desires don’t match.
Stay Positive
When writing about what you want, avoid sounding negative by listing what you don’t want. Phrases such as “no drama” or “must be on time” can make you seem frustrated or overly critical. Instead, focus on the positive qualities you’re seeking. A profile filled with optimism and openness is much more inviting and attractive.
Describe Your Life with Specificity
Rather than listing broad interests that everyone can relate to, describe things that make you unique. For example, instead of saying “I like music,” mention your favorite type of music, a concert you recently went to, or an instrument you play. Details like these make your profile more memorable and help others determine if they have anything in common with you.
Include an Invitation
Make it easy for someone to approach you by offering an invitation. Phrases like “let’s grab coffee” or “looking for someone to join me for a weekend hike” make it clear that you’re open to meeting in person. This gives potential matches a simple, straightforward way to reach out to you and suggests you’re ready to take the next step in connecting.
Get Your Friends’ and Families’ Opinions
To ensure your profile feels authentic, ask your friends or family to read it and see if they can tell it’s truly you. If they can’t immediately identify it as your profile, it may be time to rethink how you’re presenting yourself. Your online dating profile should reflect the real you—someone who stands out in a genuine way, not a generic version of yourself meant to appeal to everyone.
By following these tips, you’ll be able to craft a dating profile that better represents who you are, leading to more meaningful connections with people who share your interests and goals. Stay true to yourself, and let your personality shine through!
These tips can help you create an engaging online dating profile that truly represents who you are and attracts the right kind of attention!
